Abstract

The following debate was set up as a roundtable during the conference “Internationalizing German Communication Studies: Learning from the World” in Erfurt, Germany, in March 2024. It features three scholars originally from Russia, Indonesia and Egypt, who have been socialized both in their native and the German communication studies community and thus can refer to both “worlds” in terms of a critical analysis, but also regarding academic best practices for a deep internationalization in communication studies. The debate aims to share their (subjective) experiences and to gather ideas of what could be improved and what should be continued regarding a cosmopolitization of study programs, university structures, and research foci in German communication studies institutes.

Carola Richter, Freie Universität Berlin, Deutschland

Carola Richter is professor for international communication at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. In her research, she focuses on media systems and communication cultures in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), media and migration, foreign news coverage as well as on public diplomacy. She is the co-founder of AREACORE, the Arab-European Association of Media and Communication Researchers, and director of the Center for Media and Information Literacy (CeMIL) at Freie Universität Berlin. She is founder and co-editor of the Global Media Journal – German Edition, an open access journal for international and transcultural communication.

Anna Litvinenko, Freie Universität Berlin, Deutschland

Anna Litvinenko is a post-doctoral researcher at Freie Universität Berlin. She received her PhD in 2007 in Russia. She worked as an associate professor at the Department of International Journalism at St. Petersburg State University. Starting from 2010, she was head of the German-Russian-Center of Journalism at this university. In 2011, she came to Berlin as a recipient of the German Chancellor Fellowship for prospective leaders, which is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and since then has been in Germany in various positions, including visiting scholarships, and postdoc positions.

Subekti Priyadharma, University of Padjadjaran, Indonesien

Subekti Priyadharma is a lecturer at the University of Padjadjaran (Unpad) in Indonesia since 2009. He got his BA from the same university, but then he came to Erfurt, Germany, for his master's degree and later on also for his PhD. After spending one year as a DAAD-guest lecturer in Erfurt, he has now returned to Unpad. His research interests include ICT4D, communication for social change, rural digitalization and community networks as well as counterpublic sphere.

Hanan Badr, Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg, Österreich

Hanan Badr is Professor at the Communication Studies Department at Salzburg University. She is head of the unit Public Spheres and Inequalities with a focus on digitization and globalization. She received her BA and MA in Journalism and International Communication from Cairo University. After obtaining her Dr. phil. degree at the University of Erfurt as a DAAD scholarship holder, she returned to Egypt at Cairo University. She held a postdoc position at Freie Universität Berlin, was associate professor at the Gulf University of Sciences and Technology in Kuwait and head researcher at the Orient-Institut Beirut. She is Board member of the International Communication Association (ICA) and Chair of the Activism, Communication and Social Justice Interest Group at ICA. Her recent publications include “Arab Berlin: Dynamics of Transformation” and “Media Governance: A Cosmopolitan Critique” and the forthcoming “Critical Communication Research with Global Inclusivity”.
